WMGLD Completes Repairs in the Downtown Area

(Wakefield, MA) – The Wakefield Municipal Gas & Light Department (WMGLD) recently completed repairs to a natural gas pipe along a portion of Main Street in the downtown area. The repair involved replacing a steel pipe with a plastic pipe from Albion Street to Richardson Avenue.

After the gas division found the leak in the steel pipe in mid-March, they took a proactive approach and replaced the entire length of the steel pipe, rather than just make the repair, according to WMGLD General Manager Pete Dion. Although the replacement required more time and work, it was a permanent solution rather than a temporary fix.

In addition to the pipe replacement, the WMGLD also enhanced the area by replacing a large section of the sidewalk as well as two handicapped ramps that were cracked and in need of repair.

“We are aware that pedestrian traffic was disrupted and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused downtown merchants and shoppers,” the General Manager said. “The good news is that we replaced an aging pipe and tied it into the new, more durable pipe that was at the end of the business block.”

This should be a long-term solution to eliminate the need for additional work on the pipe in the future, according to General Manager Dion.
